Hyundai, Kia, Toyota, Honda: Servicing Without Going Back to the Dealer
Your warranty is safer than you think, with one exception Toyota and Lexus owners should know about

A lot of the cars that come through our workshop are Hyundais, Kias, Toyotas and Hondas. They are popular round here for good reason: they are reliable, the hybrids are economical, and the long manufacturer warranties make them a safe choice second-hand.
That warranty is also the reason many owners keep going back to the main dealer long after they would rather not. So here is the honest version: when you can take your car to an independent garage without losing anything, and the one or two situations where the dealer still makes sense.
The law is on your side
Under UK competition law (the Motor Vehicle Block Exemption Order, which replaced the old EU rules in 2023), a manufacturer cannot refuse to honour its warranty just because the car was serviced somewhere other than a franchised dealer. What it can insist on is that the work is done properly:
- to the manufacturer’s service schedule, at the right intervals;
- with parts and fluids that match the original specification, oil especially;
- and with a record of what was done.
That is how we service every car. We look up the schedule for your exact model and engine, use oil to the specification in your handbook, fit parts of matching quality, and give you a full record of the work, stamped in the book or printed for your file.
We have covered this in more detail in our post on servicing and warranties.
Brand by brand
Kia
Kia’s seven-year, 100,000-mile warranty is one of the best known in the business, and it stays with the car when it is sold. It does not require dealer servicing. It requires the car to be serviced to Kia’s schedule with suitable parts, and that is exactly what an independent service does. Keep your records together, because if a claim is ever made, the paperwork is what proves the car was looked after.
Hyundai
Hyundai’s standard warranty is five years with unlimited mileage, and the same principle applies: service it on time, to the schedule, with the right parts, and keep the record. Many Hyundai and Kia models share engines and hybrid systems, so the servicing is very similar.
Toyota and Lexus: the one to read carefully
This is the exception worth knowing about. Toyota’s standard warranty is three years, but its Toyota Relax scheme (and Lexus Relax for Lexus) extends the cover after each service, up to 10 years or 100,000 miles, but only when the service is done at a Toyota or Lexus authorised repairer. Hybrid owners can also have the hybrid battery cover extended after an annual hybrid health check at the dealer.
So if your Toyota is young enough to still be building up Relax cover and that cover matters to you, the dealer is the logical choice. If the car is past the point where you care about extending it, or you would rather have the savings than the extra year of cover, an independent service does the car just as much good. It is your call, and we would rather you made it knowing the facts.
Honda
Honda’s standard warranty works like most others: service on time, to the schedule, with the right parts. Older Hondas have plenty of life in them, and many owners come to us once the car is out of warranty and the dealer is no longer the obvious place to go.
Hybrids are not a reason to go back to the dealer
Toyota, Lexus, Hyundai, Kia and Honda all sell a lot of hybrids. A hybrid still has an engine, so it still needs its oil, filters, spark plugs, coolant and brake fluid changed. The brakes need extra attention, because regenerative braking means the discs are used gently and can rust or seize from lack of use. And the high-voltage system needs a technician who knows how to work safely around it.
We service hybrid and electric cars, and the service is built around what those cars actually need.
When the dealer does make sense
- Recalls. Recall work is free, and it is done by the franchised network. If your car has an outstanding recall, the dealer is the place for it. We will tell you if we spot one.
- Warranty repairs. If something fails that the manufacturer should pay for, the claim goes through the dealer.
- Toyota or Lexus Relax, as above, if you want to keep extending it.
- Some software updates can only be done with the manufacturer’s own systems.
For everything else, from servicing, brakes, tyres and air conditioning to diagnostics, suspension and the MOT, you do not need to drive to a main dealer.
What you get by staying local
- You talk to the people who work on your car, not a call centre or a service adviser reading from a screen.
- Clear prices. Our servicing prices are on the website and you can book online.
- MOT and service together, on one visit, at one garage.
- No upselling. If something can wait, we will say so.
Frequently asked questions
Will an independent service void my Kia or Hyundai warranty?
No, as long as the car is serviced to the manufacturer’s schedule with parts and fluids of matching quality, and you keep a record. That is how we service every car.
Does my Toyota have to go to Toyota?
Not by law, and an independent service will not void the standard warranty. But Toyota Relax and Lexus Relax only extend the cover when the service is done by their authorised network, so if you want that extension, the dealer is the way to keep it.
Can you reset the service light?
Yes. We reset the service reminder as part of the service, so the car counts down to the next one correctly.
Do you use genuine parts?
We use original equipment or matching-quality parts, and oil to the specification your manufacturer sets. If you would prefer manufacturer-branded parts for a particular job, just ask and we will quote for them.
